The Long Loneliness: The Autobiography of the Legendary Catholic Social Activist
by Dorothy Day
Dorothy Day was a legendary Catholic social activist, a founder of the Catholic Worker Movement. This book is her autobiography and describes her commitment to peace, nonviolence, racial justice as well as the cause of the poor and the outcast. Not only is it a fascinating description of her personal history; it is also a profound description of American social history.
We gather via Zoom at 2pm on Sunday afternoons. All are welcome to join the discussion at any time.

Saturday, March 1
5:00 pm
St. John's will hold our quarterly Potluck and Mingle at 5:00 pm on Saturday, March 1st. This is a family-friendly event; balloons will be provided for the kids to play with.
Come and meet some of the folks who are newer to St. John's, and mingle with those who attend the 'other' service. An excellent opportunity to get to know each other better.
If you wish to bring a dish to share, there is a sign-up sheet on the table in the narthex. Sign up for whatever you feel like bringing.
We hope to see you there!

Holy Eucharist with Imposition of Ashes
6:45 am, 12 noon, and 7:00 pm
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Its official name is “Day of Ashes,” so called because of the practice of rubbing ashes on one’s forehead in the sign of a cross.
Lent is intended to be a time of self-denial, moderation, fasting, and the forsaking of sinful activities and habits. Ash Wednesday begins this period of spiritual discipline. It takes place 40 days (not counting Sundays) before Easter Sunday.
In earlier times, Lent also became a season of preparation for baptism for new converts to the faith. They would use the 40 days to study, repent, and learn, and then join the family of Christ by their Baptism on Easter Day.

Yearly Events
Each year on Holy Saturday, the Saturday before Easter Sunday, we invite children of all ages from our surrounding community
to come meet the Easter Bunny, play games, enjoy a wonderful buffet lunch, and help us find thousands of colored eggs stuffed with candy that suddenly appear in the field behind the church. A fun-filled family event that celebrates the joy and promise of new life.
Since 1978, the purpose of St. John's Family Camp has been to strengthen the friendships of our church community, surrounded by the beauty of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Family Camp is held along the Bear River, at the Donner Mine, in the area of Emigrant Gap. Campers can come for any amount of time; for one day, several days, or the whole week.
On the first Sunday of October (the feast of St. Francis) all are invited to bring their beloved animal companions (or pictures of your companions if they want to sleep in) to our services (held outdoors) for a special blessing. Cats, Dogs, Hamsters, Rabbits, Gerbils, Spiders, Snakes, Ponies, Chickens, Roosters, all of God’s beloved creatures are welcomed and honored.
Each year a day or two before Halloween, St. John’s provides a fun and safe place for families to come and “Trick or Treat.” We bring our cars to the parking lot, put on our costumes, and open our decorated trunks that are filled with all kinds of safe pre-packaged candy. We also throw in a bounce house and other games. We'll have a pet costume contest: Cutest, Scariest, Most Creative. Come join us for a “Boo-tiful” evening as we enjoy the very creative ways in which people choose to celebrate Halloween.
